BPy Kathi Holzschuhererhaps you are new to South Texas or just never made it a priority to go to Luckenbach, Texas. However, this tiny town with a population of 3 has a larger-than-life reputation. (Thank you, Waylon and Willie and the Boys!)Luckenbach, named for a German immigrant to the area, was purchased by satirist and humorist Hondo Crouch back in 1971. He swiftly proclaimed himself mayor of the former Indian trading post, and reintroduced the town’s motto, “Everybody is Somebody in Luckenbach.” Crouch is responsible for celebrations such as the Luckenbach World’s Fair, the first Texas Women Only Chili Cook-Off, Return of the Mud Daubers Celebration, and many No- Talent Contests. There’s not a lot to the actual town. Instead, a post office/general store attached to a bar, a kissing booth, and a big old barn dance hall are all nestled into the beautiful hill country landscape. Visitors can often beheard saying, “Is this all there is?” According to writer Becky Crouch Barrales, “These people come from a high tech – action movie – crowded freeway civilization expecting our famous town to be Fiesta Texas and finding instead Siesta Texas.”The real treasure in Luckenbach is the endless stream of musical talent that graces the outdoor stage, with over 300 annual shows and events. Their line-up includes Americana, Honky-tonk, Western Swing, Rockabilly, Roots Rock, Alt-Country, and Blues. A quick check of their website will give you the full line-up. Somehow, it’s never too hot in Luckenbach to kick back with an ice-cold beverage and revel in the sounds of Texas talent. The drive to Luckenbach is popular amongst bikers, who enjoy the quiet winding back roads. From San Antonio, take I-10 West to exit #537, north of Boerne, turn left at RR1376 and go 27 miles. Turn left just past the South Grape Creek Bridge ontoLuckenbach Town Loop.Find the performance schedule and com.where you spotted the school house to Deadline is September 13, 2022.We hope you’ll have fun with our version of a mini-scavenger hunt within our pages.
