unwanted, abandoned, and sick pets across the state of Texas. Highlights interviewed Monique and her husband, Lloyd, in March 2018 for a feature about the couple, hoping to shine a light on the homeless pet population in Bexar County and how other concerned community members could help. Thanks to the article, which was published in the April 2018 issue of Highlights, a reader who had adopted one of Monique’s foster dogs was able to reconnect with the Wellesley’s and update them on the beloved pup named Zena.
Several years ago, Monique rescued Zena, a purebred boxer, who had been bred repeatedly, abandoned and was half- starved. Monique nursed Zena back to health and took the dog to get spayed and vaccinated. When she returned to the vet to get Zena’s stitches removed, a woman in the waiting room with a boxer of her own fell in love with sweet Zena. She asked Monique if she could adopt the dog, and Monique knew Zena had found a loving home.
However, life took a turn, and Zena’s adoptive mom changed jobs, moved to Florida and was temporarily living out of a hotel. She couldn’t keep Zena, so she found a new home for the dog with a wonderful
Amongst those hit the hardest are gyms and other workout facilities like the Mays Family YMCA. However, the Mays Family YMCA has worked hard to maintain a welcome environment while taking every precaution to keep the Stone Oak community healthy and safe
“While our procedures have had to change, the Y’s values of kindness, honesty, respect and responsibility remain intact,” said Stephanie Chavira, Director of Marketing and Communications.
At Mays Family YMCA, all staff and members are required to wear a mask while inside and complete a temperature check before entering. Members are encouraged to wipe down equipment before and after use. Safety breaks throughout the day allow for deep disinfection of equipment and high touch areas. All open spaces inside the Y have are designed to help ensure social distancing. Lastly, the Y’s reservation system allows for social distancing in group exercise classes (both indoor and outdoor), aquatics activities and activities in the gymnasium. And those who might not yet feel comfortable returning to the Y, both live and on-demand virtual activities for all ages

or fearful than usual, you’re not alone. “Financial concerns, sadness and isolation can harm your diet, physical health and mental health,” said Chavira. “For these reasons, taking 20 to 30 minutes a day to focus on you - your health, and decompress
is crucial.”

couple named Terri and Ernest. Even though Monique and Lloyd knew that Zena was loved and cared for in her new home, they thought of Zena often. Then, one day, Monique received a text. It was from Terri, Zena’s new adoptive mom.
“She asked if I was the Monique in the Stone Oak Highlights article and she wanted to bring Zena to visit us for a reunion,” said Monique. “It was an amazing visit. She remembered us and we visited for hours. Terri and Ernest were so appreciative that we rescued Zena. She hit the lotto!”
