Pink Berets - continued from page 8
The Pink Berets, a non-profit organization established to address, educate, coordinate, and provide aid and relief to active duty women of the United States Armed Forces and Veterans seeking assistance with invisible injuries such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Military Sexual Trauma, and Combat Trauma Stress on a local and national level.
“The building blocks of The Pink Berets were not put together with the help of a template that already existed,” explained Gattas. “We built something from scratch in order to help women find a means of healing on their own terms.”
The Pink Berets offers many types of therapeutic techniques to help Veterans process and come to terms with their experience, gain mastery over their reactions, and re-establish a sense of hope, personal efficacy, and control. Services are offered at no-cost and include individual, group, and family therapy; culinary arts therapy; equine therapy; customized CrossFit therapy; art therapy; hiking/
kayaking/outdoor adventuring; and more. “We have really allowed women to approach healing in a way that makes them feel like nothing is forced,” explained Gattas. “We want them to find out what their journey looks like on their own terms. What does normalcy mean to them? They have the ability to choose how they want to heal without the barriers of a financial burden or the fear of being ostracized.”
A lot of Gattas’ own personal healing has come from watching The Pink Berets grow and impact the lives of women who have come through the programs she has facilitated.
“I wanted to build this so no one else out there like myself would have to struggle,” she explained.“It’s given me a lot of reprieve in that sense. I see myself in these women, I see them in me, and I see what this means to them. That’s everything to me.”
