5 Keys to Overcoming Your Fear of Public SpeakingLet us make your celebrations unforgettable!San Antonio - Stone Oak700 E. Sonterra Blvd San Antonio, TX 78258 (210) 495-2253NothingBundtCakes.comIBy Sonny Melendrezt’s your turn to give a toast or speak in front your office staff or give a presentation to a group of strangers.Your heart starts to race, you begin to shake and you want to run far away. You are actually suffering from what is known as, glossophobia, the fear of public speaking.San Antonio based psychiatrist, Dr. Harry Croft, offers help for those resolving to conquer the phobia that is consistently among the top fears most people have. It ranks up there with the fear of spiders, snakes, drowning and yes, even death.Dr. Croft says there are 5 keys to overcome this fear:1. Understand and rethink your stage fright by renaming your fear to excitement. In the same way that you would anticipate a roller coaster ride, let your expectation become exhilarating.2. Visualize yourself succeeding – Avoiding your fear gives it more power. Instead, enable yourself to face the activity that causes the fear by imagining being well received.3. Practice your presentation out loud until you are comfortable with the content and confident with your delivery. Rehearsing in front of a mirror is like watching a movie of your performance. Your subconsciousis taking it all in and will remind you that you’ve done this before.4. Improve your delivery by being authentically enthusiastic. Use your smile to let the audience know that you’re enjoying the experience. They will take their cue from you.5. Learn from prior experiences by letting them go and realize that the audience wants you to succeed. Remember a positive past event, no matter how small.Dr. Croft reminds us that your audience, large or small, really wants to hear what you have to say. If you focus on what you have to offer and how you can make them feel, as a result, you are more likely to hit the mark.Applying these valuable keys may not totally eliminate the butterflies, but they’re more likely to fly in formation!Sonny Melendrezis an award-winningmotivational speaker,Hall of Fame radio/TVhost and author, basedin San Antonio.
