The Secret Front Porch To The TexasBAquick drive north on 281 just over the Bexar/Comal County line is a little “Mayberry-Esque” town called Bulverde. (If you are new to the area, it’s pronounced Bull-Vur-Dee.)Drive north on 281 and exit FM1863. Turn left at the stop sign and head west. Keep your speed in check; remember, this is Mayberry. As you drive this winding road, you’ll see a smattering of offices, a small school, a regional airport, and vintage farm equipment. Suddenly, you find yourself in the Old Village of Downtown Bulverde. But, don’t blink! It’s tiny. It’s also charming and historic.Whether it’s a day with the kids, a romantic ride, or fun with friends, Bulverde has something appealing for everyone. With two parks, this little town is family-friendly! Bulverde Community Park sits on 13 acres and features a public playground, practice fields, picnic areas, and a water splash pad. Kleck Park comprises 43 densely treed acres and offers 1.2 miles of trails for walking, biking, hiking, or horseback.A handful of restaurants offer some of the best cuisines in the Hill Country. Hatch Café and Bakery serves breakfasty Kathi HolzschuherHill Countryand lunch daily except Sundays until 2 pm. Their baked goods are homemade, and the soups, salads, and sandwiches are piled high with goodness. Across the street, Verde Bistro serves handcrafted cocktails and Argentinian-inspired tapas inside a historic old building where the vintage wood floor slopes ever so slightly. Open Tuesday-Saturday, customers must be at least 21. Pets are welcome on the patio. Speaking of wine, the newly opened Cibolo Creek Vineyards is pouring Friday-Sunday and features live music, wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres, and specialty coffee. But don’t bring anyone under 21 after 12 noon.If shopping is your bag, be sure to visit Texas Carpet Baggers for handcrafted, one-of-a-kind leather and fabric handbags. Feeling artsy? The Makery is a premier art and metals studio open Thursday through Saturday, offering “how-to” classes.If you need to mail a letter, swing through the parking lot of the Bulverde Post Office,opened in 1959 in a former dry goods store. Next door, pop into the tiny little floral shop, Plantiques, for a floral arrangement, or vintage teacup.A perfect way to end your day is to stop at Rustic Unlimited on the 281S access. It’s home to the enormous metal dinosaur and mariachi.
