When Are You Too Old For Hormones? (answer: When Your Heart Stops Beating)
RBy Dr. Donna Becker
ecently, I was asked to make a presentation to the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association
Mid-Winter Conference: “Hormone Replacement Therapy Improves Quality of Life in Older Adults”. I chose to speak about this topic to convince other doctors to utilize hormone replacement therapy in their practices
Frankly, I am upset when patients tell me, “My doctor said I need to stop hormones, it’s been too long, and I am too old”. Or, “My doctor/nurse practitioner said it was dangerous for me to be taking hormones at my age”. (Funny, but I never hear men patients tell me their doctor suggested they stop testosterone!) But, men have told me that their doctor thought the testosterone dose should be lower.
“This systematic review and meta- analysis of 27 randomized placebo- controlled clinical trials involving a total of 1,890 men found that testosterone treatment was associated with a significant reduction of depressive symptoms, particularly in participants who received higher dose regimens”. I quoted from another article about how progesterone in women is synthesized by neurons and is important for preventing

and even reversing changes in the brain which occur with aging. So, yes, even if a woman had a hysterectomy, she still needs progesterone. Another article pointed out a longer duration estrogen exposure was associated with better cognitive status in the older woman. Women need estradiol as long as their heart is beating!
Adults who choose to remain active throughout their lives need hormones for their brain, heart, bones, and maintenance of strength. We will live 5-6 decades after menopause/andropause, in a state of steadily declining vitality without hormones. Each person is different and certainly, not every person needs hormones restored to a 25-year-old level. It depends on blood levels and symptoms. So, get evaluated and treated, if necessary.
